A burglar stole cash from the home of a 76-year-old woman in Locks Heath while she was in her garden.

The burglary too place between 11am and mid-day on Thursday, April 25 and £50 cash was stolen from the victim’s handbag at the house in Locks Road.

Detectives are appealing for information.

Investigating Officer Detective Constable Sandi Peet said: “This burglary occurred during the day while the elderley occupant was in the garden. Locks Road is a busy thoroughfare with the shopping centre close by.

“We would appeal to anyone who saw anybody suspicious in the area to contact the police.”

With warmer weather on the way, police have warned homeowners to keep opportunist thieves at bay by remembering to lock doors and windows and hide valuables from view to help keep their property secure.

Officers have suggested the following advice on crime prevention:

  • Keep ground floor or accessible windows shut and locked in rooms you are not using. Don’t leave doors and patio doors open.
  • Remember to lock up properly before going to bed.
  • Do not do business at the door. Often companies who tout at the door for gardening and home improvements turn out to be bogus.
  • If you are in the back garden having a barbecue, don’t be tempted to leave the front door open for your visitors to let themselves in.
  • If you are going out for the evening remember to use a timer switch on a lamp or radio to give the impression someone is home.
  • Remember to shut car windows and sunroofs even if parked on your drive.
  • If you are outside gardening, don’t be tempted to leave doors and accessible windows open.

Anyone with information can contact DC Peet at Fareham DCID by phoning 101. Information can be given anonymously by phoning the independent Crimestoppers charity on 0800 555 111.
